💪 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has received strong score from critics
🏆 It’s currently on a Metascore of 84 after 19 critic reviews
🆚 That’s a big improvement over last year’s entry, which scored 65
📅 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is out October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2
Another year, another Call of Duty, but it seems like Activision’s annual shooter is a big improvement over Black Ops 7, which was generally panned by critics and players alike.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is currently sitting on a Metacritic score of 84 after 19 reviews – a massive bump over the paltry 65 Black Ops 7 achieved.
The game is out today, October 23, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first release on a Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Ghosts launched on the Wii U.
Here’s what critics made of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Destructoid gave the latest Call of Duty 9/10 and said it shows that CoD is still a game worth playing:
“With a total package of three distinct and fleshed-out modes, Modern Warfare 4 is Call of Duty's strongest argument for a full-length development cycle. When given time and resources, Infinity Ward has shown it can still be at the top of the craft, and that CoD is still a game worth playing each year.”
DayOne also gave Modern Warfare 4 9/10, and said:
“Could Modern Warfare 4 have been a bit more bold and daring? Perhaps, but the end result is one of the most rock solid Call of Duty games ever made, one that anyone even slightly interested in this franchise should really consider playing. Infinity Ward knocked it out of the park with this one, and I can see myself losing countless hours to this game throughout its life cycle.”
Game Informer was another outlet impressed with the Modern Warfare 4, and called the game “a strong return to form”:
“While the plot execution is a bit shaky, engaging multiplayer options, including DMZ, aptly demonstrate that Infinity Ward can still deliver compelling military-FPS experiences. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a strong return to form that serves as a solid sendoff for the rebooted subseries.”
GameSpot gave Call of Duty 8/10 in its review, saying:
“Modern Warfare 4 delivers a strong and engaging multiplayer experience to complement an epic campaign conclusion and captivating DMZ mode.”
Quite a few outlets’ reviews are “work in progress”, but initial impressions are still positive. IGN said “Modern Warfare 4 made me feel something for the series again”, and Insider Gaming said “Modern Warfare 3 delivers the greatest Call of Duty campaign ever made.”
It’s clear that Activision and Xbox have righted the wrongs of Black Ops 7 with Modern Warfare 4, and delivered a more rounded, player-focused package that has the potential to reignite a series that had arguably lost its luster.
