Saints Row is out today, August 23, and it appears that most critics think the open-world game is distinctly average, with reviewers lamenting the sheer number of bugs, filler missions, and uninspired gameplay.
Saints Row is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store. The PS5 version of the game is currently sitting on a Metacritic score of 64 after 47 critic reviews, which means Saints Row has received “mixed or average” review scores.
IGN awarded Saints Row a 6/10, saying, “…it’s a very familiar and uninspired brand of sandbox fun that’s unlikely to wow anybody who’s played a Saints Row game before, much less GTA.”
GameSpot also gave Saints Row a 6/10, noting that the game “reins in the absurdity to a fairly significant degree but still manages to indulge in some of the chaotic action and silly hijinks the series is known for.”
Game Informer was more impressed by Saints Row than most critics, awarding the game an 8.5 out of 10. “It may not push your new hardware to the limit and is a little rough around the edges, but the latest Saints Row is everything it needs to be, delivering a wonderful comedic experience with plenty of depth.”
However, some critics didn’t click with Saints Row at all. Pure Xbox gave the game a 4/10 and said, “Saints Row is one of the worst urban open world games we’ve played in recent memory, a bland, janky-old fashioned mess of a game that fails to deliver on the promise held by a reboot of this zany franchise.”
