The new Disney Plus PS5 app finally supports 4K HDR playback
Now you can enjoy your favorite Disney+ shows at a higher resolution on PS5

🏰 A native Disney Plus app is finally available on PS5
👍 It replaces the PS4 app that ran on PS5 and was capped at 1080p
🤩 The new app supports 4K HDR playback
💰 The updated Disney Plus app arrives before the service’s price hike
It’s been a long wait, but the PS5 Disney Plus app now supports 4K HDR playback.
The Disney Plus app has been available on PS5 since launch, but users still had to use the earlier PS4 app, which capped the streaming platform’s resolution to 1080p (thanks, The Verge).
The new Disney Plus PS5 app offers superior image quality, then, and also lets those who have HDR displays enjoy more specular highlights and detail. If you’ve recently been watching shows like Andor or She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on your PS5, you can expect a significant bump in picture quality.
“A key part of our global expansion strategy is to meet consumers wherever they are, which is why we’re excited to enhance both Disney Plus and Star Plus for PlayStation 5 users,” said Jerrell Jimerson, EVP of product and design for Disney streaming. “The ability to support 4K HDR video streaming on the platform will also improve the viewing experience for fans.”
The Disney Plus app has lagged behind the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video, all of which offer 4K playback on PS5. It’s strange that it’s taken this long for Disney to update its app, but at least it’s finally here.
The update arrives before Disney Plus and Hulu become more expensive. Disney’s Premium subscription tier is increasing by $3 a month, while Hulu is also increasing by $2 a month. A cheaper ad-supported tier will be available on December 8, however, and costs $7.99 a month.
