A former Rockstar director has stated that the new GTA 6 leaks are a “nothing burger” and urged people to “calm down”.
As per GameSpot, Obbe Vermeij, a former director at Rockstar North who was the technical director on GTA 3, GTA San Andreas, GTA 4 and others, has urged people to be realistic about what Rockstar is doing in response.
He stated that Rockstar is intentionally staying quiet as part of its marketing strategy to generate hype for GTA 6, and that the leaks aren’t affecting its plans.
The GTA 6 Extended Look is still expected to exclusively release first on Netflix on August 27, before arriving six hours later on Rockstar’s YouTube channel.
Vermeij later stated the leaks aren’t a big deal because “90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets” and added that “They don’t have the time and don’t want spoilers.”
Furthermore, he stated that the dev teams on GTA 6 are probably “a little annoyed” about the leaks, but that’s about it.
Vermeij noted that he thinks the “current leaks are far less consequential than Hot Coffee was”, referring to the controversial situation where Rockstar’s publisher Take-Two was forced to pay out money to settle lawsuits related to a GTA San Andreas PC mod that unblocked an interactive adult minigame.
The latest batch of GTA 6 leaks began earlier this month, with an array of footage claiming to be from the upcoming title showing everything from lead character Jason shooting basketball hoops to beating up a delivery driver and more besides.
Rockstar is yet to identify who is behind the apparent leaks, but has reportedly subpoenaed both Microsoft and Discord in order to obtain a wide range of user data relating to the leaks.
