💿 Here’s how to upgrade your copy of the game on disc and digital
If you’re a Destiny 2 player who has the game downloaded on PS5, you might want to check you’re actually playing the right version of the game.
Destiny 2 received a free new-gen update after the PS5 and Xbox Series X launched in 2020, but a lot of players aren’t using Sony’s flagship device to its full potential. In its latest blog post, developer Bungie reminded players they have to manually upgrade to the free PS5 version if they want to see Destiny’s world in all its glory.
“We’ve noticed a notable number of PS5 players playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 on their current-generation consoles,” Bungie said, before directing players on how to get the free upgrade. It’s a little laborious but shouldn’t take too long.
If you originally bought Destiny 2 on disc, follow the steps below. You’ll need a disc drive in your PS5 for this; something to consider if you’re choosing between the PS5 Disc vs Digital editions.
Sign in to your PSN account on your PS5
Insert the Destiny 2 PS4 disc into your PS5
Navigate to the game’s hub on the system’s home screen
Select the upgrade offer and continue to download
Once the download is complete, you can play the PS5 version using the PS4 disc. You’ll need to insert the disc every time you play
If you have a digital version of Destiny 2, do the following:
Sign in to your PSN account on your PS5
Search the PlayStation store for “Destiny 2 PS4 & PS5”
Select the game tile and click the “Download” option
Once the download’s complete, make sure you play the version of the game called Destiny 2, not Destiny 2 PS4
It’s well worth upgrading to the new-gen version. Not only does it support 4K resolutions and 60fps, but it also boasts faster load times, a field of view slider, and crossplay with PS4 consoles. The game’s PvP mode, Crucible, can also be played at 120fps on PS5. Any paid expansions, season passes, and Silver you’ve accumulated will carry over.
If you’re an Xbox player, don’t worry about a thing. It’s a lot easier to upgrade Destiny 2 from Xbox One to Xbox Series X, as it’s done automatically for anyone with the game in their Xbox account. Simply boot up your Xbox Series X and the correct, latest version will download, courtesy of Microsoft’s Smart Delivery System. Destiny 2’s Crucible mode is one of many Xbox Series X 120fps games, so you can enjoy higher frame rates if you have a compatible display.

Last I looked, 120 frames in D2 on PS5 is available only in PvP, with 60fps 4K in PvE modes.
But yeah, nobody draws scale and weight and texture in any resolution better than Bungie. Sound design also on par with the best.
