ModRetro has announced a partnership with OpenAI to help create new games for its Chromatic handheld, and you can even build your own.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the move at the brand’s DevDay 2026, where he gave those in attendance a special edition transparent ModRetro Chromatic handheld and invited them to a session for the Codex Game Studio, where users could make their own retro games for the handheld.
Both brands have announced a collaboration on game creation for the Chromatic using OpenAI’s Codex coding agent, and have revealed a suite of titles that have been built with Codex for Game Boy Color on its developer site.
The games shown off include FlapGPT, a take on a Flappy Bird-style title with a San Francisco background; PizzaDash, a simple side-scrolling platformer where you’re a pizza delivery guy on a moped dodging obstacles; and Seedy’s Sweet Garden, a casual puzzle title with cute characters.
The games are available to play in a browser or can be downloaded as a ROM for you to load onto compatible hardware.
There is even a link that provides guidance on how to make your own games with Codex Game Studio, so you too can get in on the action if you’d like to. With a compatible cartridge, you can even flash the game onto it, meaning you can create a physical copy.
We liked the ModRetro Chromatic a lot when it first launched. We called the Chromatic the “best way to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games... ever”, giving it a perfect 5/5 score. It provides an authentic Game Boy experience with modern accoutrements such as an IPS screen with the option for Gorilla or Sapphire Glass coating, as well as a USB-C port.
