Actor and ex-WWE star Dave Bautista isn’t keeping quiet about his enthusiasm for the upcoming Netflix Gears of War movie.
Earlier this month, Netflix announced it’s partnered with The Coalition to develop a Gears of War feature film alongside an adult-oriented animated series. The movie will be a direct adaptation of the video game saga, and Bautista wants in.
“I can’t make this any easier,” the Guardians of the Galaxy actor tweeted alongside a clip of himself wearing a suit of COG armor. The video was originally released as a promo clip in 2019 when he was added to Gears 5 as a multiplayer character, which made what was already one of the best Xbox Series X games just a little bit better.
Although short, the clip does demonstrate just how similar a suited-up Bautista looks to Marcus Fenix. It’s the muscles, mainly. Stick an incredibly ripped bearded man with a gruff voice in a futuristic set of armor and you’re halfway to capturing Fenix’s entire personality. Who needs three-dimensional characters when they’re filled with enough testosterone to fend off an alien invasion?
The tweet has gained a lot of traction among fans of the game who have voiced their support for a Bautista-led Gears of War adaptation. Even Cliff Bleszinski, the lead designer of the first Gears of War trilogy, has given his endorsement.
But Netflix hasn’t announced any names attached to the project just yet. It’s still early days for the project, so we’ll have to wait and see if Bautista gets a place in the production.
This isn’t the first time Bautista has expressed his excitement at taking on the role of Fenix. Speaking to Collider last year, he said he batted away the opportunity to join the Fast & Furious franchise to instead talk to Warner Bros. about the chance of starring in a Gears of War movie and previously told GameSpot that the grizzly, goateed and perpetually gruff war hero is his “dream role”.
Since making a name for himself as a professional wrestler, Bautista transitioned into acting and has starred in a fair few blockbuster hits. You’ll probably recognize him from Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2048, and Denis Villeneuve’s recent adaptation of Dune. He’s set to appear in Glass Onion, the upcoming sequel to the murder mystery Knives Out due to release later this year.
Netflix has had a mixed run of video game TV adaptations. Anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was very well received by fans, and the live-action The Witcher series found a home among mainstream audiences. But the recent horror series Resident Evil didn’t get the reception and was canceled after one season.
