🔫 Microsoft gave Paramount the green light to turn Halo into a live-action series
Netflix is set to adapt the Gears of War video game series into a live-action feature film and has partnered with the game’s developer The Coalition to bring Marcus Fenix and co. to the big screen.
The streamer also announced an adult-orientated Gears of War animated series is in the works, and more stories in the game’s universe could be told in the future.
Fans have been waiting to see the hulking frames of Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Damon Baird, and Augustus Cole get the silver screen treatment, but the fact that Netflix has gotten the nod ahead of Paramount comes as a slight surprise.
Not that Netflix hasn’t got the chops to deliver, mind. The streamer has created critically well-received adaptations like The Witcher and is home to several successful anime series like Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners, Castlevania, and Arcane.
Gears of War on Netflix only comes as a surprise because Microsoft partnered with Paramount for its Halo TV series, which is due to get a second season in 2023. The Halo TV show has proved to be polarizing with some hardcore fans due to its loose interpretation of the games but it managed to obtain an audience score of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been deemed fairly successful.
Gears of War seems like prime fodder for a live-action adaptation. The series is known for its beefy, muscle-clad protagonists, gruesome execution kills, and fearsome Locust enemies, all of which should make for some entertaining moments. Microsoft is still committed to the franchise, too, with Gears 5 being the latest entry in the series and one of the best Xbox Series X games you can play right now.
Even though Netflix hasn’t shared any more details other than its initial announcement, we might already know who could play Marcus Fenix. One Hollywood star has repeatedly made their interest known in playing Marcus Fenix – and that star is Dave Bautista.
The ex-WWE superstar has established himself as a household name in recent years, starring in Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2048, and Dune. But Bautista has repeatedly said he wants to play the role of Marcus Fenix should a Gears of War film ever be made.
In 2018, Bautista said it would be his “dream role” to play Fenix, and reiterated his desire to play the game’s lead protagonist in an interview with Collider in 2021, saying he’d rather enlist with the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) than star in a new Fast & Furious film.
"I don’t make any pretense about it,” Bautista said. “I had a chance to get a meeting at WB [Warner Bros.]. They wanted to talk to me about Fast and the Furious, and I said 'I’m not interested, let’s talk about [Gears of War character] Marcus Fenix.’”
While there’s no guarantee that Dave “The Animal” Bautista will get to play the role of his dreams, he at least got to star in Gears 5 as a multiplayer character.
