Nintendo has said that it “underestimated” demand for its upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake and the Zelda 40th anniversary Switch 2 special edition console and Pro Controller, which remain sold out at the majority of stores.
As shared on X by Dave Gibson, senior analyst at MST Financial, the Japanese video game company underestimated just how in-demand an Ocarina of Time remake would be, especially as it’s a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, which has a fraction of the install base of the original Switch.
The special edition Zelda Switch 2 has been eagerly snapped up by fans, with the console selling out quickly after pre-orders were announced. Sporadic restocks have taken place at the Nintendo Store, while a few lucky customers have managed to find the system at their local stores.
However, there’s good news on the horizon. Not only has Nintendo promised that more inventory is on the way – a note that’s clearly displayed on the Nintendo Store’s product listing – but we also expect Walmart and Target to hold a large restock
Walmart and Target will re-open orders for the console on November 6, after holding back inventory due to a supply chain issue. Walmart is also issuing eGift cards to anyone whose Zelda Switch 2 pre-order was cancelled, compensating those affecting with $519 – the full price of the console. Essentially, it means you could end up getting the Zelda Switch 2 for free during the restock.
Those who are willing to adventure out to their local Best Buy and GameStop will also have an opportunity of securing the console, as certain locations will be holding a midnight launch on November 5, and limited units will be available to purchase.
Zelda Switch 2 Pro Controller restock update
It isn’t just the Zelda 40th anniversary Switch 2 that its in high demand, as Nintendo also released a special Zelda Switch 2 Pro Controller on October 29 alongside the console. Just like the special edition Switch 2, it’s been extremely hard to find the Pro Controller in stock.
However, there’s a high chance a restock will occur alongside the Zelda Switch 2, meaning Walmart, Target and the Nintendo Store will be your best bet for online, while GameStop and Best Buy are more likely to offer stock in stores.
Nintendo’s New York and San Francisco stores are also holding a midnight launch event, but it’s already sold out unless you managed to get a Warp Pipe Pass.
