It looks like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will take advantage of the latest Nintendo Switch 2 update that added VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) when playing in TV Mode.
According to Nintendo’s official store page under “supported features”, VRR Output is listed on compatible televisions (thanks, Nintendo Life).
It’ll be the second game to support the display tech that was previously only available when playing in Handheld Mode until an update last week. Games that have already been released need to be patched to support VRR, such as Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, which is currently the only game to do so.
VRR requires a compatible display, but the benefits are huge. Not only does it prevent screen tearing, but any frame rate drops inside a certain window are much harder to perceive, along with any judder.
For games that run at an uncapped frame rate, VRR is a must, and also allows developers to run games at 40fps when in TV Mode, which is often preferable to 30fps.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a sumptuous-looking remake that runs at 60fps. However, there’s a chance it could fall below that target during certain scenes, something that VRR will help smooth out.
