👗 ChatGPT can now help you try clothes on virtually and pick out complementary styles
🤖 OpenAI says this is possible due to its new Images 2.5 model, thanks to more natural lighting and richer textures in generated images
📱 You can also favorite items, and they will be stored alongside images of tried-on items in the ChatGPT app
🆚 Google launched a similar feature last year in Google Photos, so it remains to be seen how popular it’ll be in ChatGPT
OpenAI is experimenting with how ChatGPT can help folks shop online, and now it can even let you try on clothes virtually, just like Google Photos does.
As per TechCrunch, OpenAI announced on Thursday that it was launching two new shopping features globally, with virtual try-ons of clothes and accessories alongside a new favoriting function that helps users save products they like for later.
OpenAI says these new features have been made possible thanks to the new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which the firm claims allows for more natural lighting and richer textures in generated images, follows editing instructions more reliably, and reduces image generation latency.
Virtual try-on
The virtual try-on feature allows users to upload a selfie or full-body photo to ChatGPT to visualize how clothing or an accessory may look on them. It’ll appear as a new Try On button in ChatGPT’s shopping results.
You can also access this virtual try-on feature in another way: by uploading an image of an item, such as a screenshot, and asking ChatGPT to try it on for you.
Favorites, and other ways to shop
As for the Favorites option, this lets you save products you see to a library in the ChatGPT app so you can return to them later. OpenAI says these images will be saved alongside your try-on images, presumably creating a virtual wardrobe of sorts.
The company also says that ChatGPT can help you shop in other ways, too. For instance, you can describe a style you’d like to try and then ask the assistant to shop for the pieces needed to complete the look.
Or, you could upload a photo of a celebrity’s outfit, and ask ChatGPT to find the items someone’s wearing that are available for purchase, using the app as a more advanced form of Google Lens.
It remains to be seen if folks will embrace ChatGPT for this kind of activity, though, as Google added this virtual wardrobe feature to Photos last year.
OpenAI also recently launched a ChatGPT plugin for the Apple Messages app, allowing the AI chatbot to read and respond to Apple iMessages on macOS with deep, hardware-level access.
At the same time, it’s also pivoting into hardware by collaborating with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on a hockey-puck-sized smart speaker that could be very expensive.
