The next PUBG update brings a slew of exciting changes, including a brand-new map called Deston and more graphics options for PS5 and Xbox Series X.

From July 21, those who own an Xbox Series X will be able to play PUBG at 4K / 60fps, as well as toggle between two types of anti-aliasing: FXAA (fast approximate anti-aliasing) or TAA (temporal anti-aliasing). This wasn’t previously the case, as the game previously ran at 1080p.

PS5 owners will also get to choose between two anti-aliasing settings but will have to settle for 1440p at 60fps. If you’re not using a 4K display, you may even be stuck at 1080p / 60fps, as the PS5 can’t natively output at 1440p resolution. Still, it’s an improvement on the previous 1080p resolution cap.

Along with the resolution bump, the ability to switch between two types of anti-aliasing is a welcome change, as TAA does a better job of softening sharp edges on objects but can introduce some ghosting.

➡️ The Shortcut Skinny

  • 🤩 New graphics modes on PS5 and Xbox Series X

  • 📺 4K / 60fps on Xbox Series X, 1440p / 60fps on PS5

  • 🆕 Two anti-aliasing modes to choose from

  • 🗺️ New map called Deston

  • 🆕 New gameplay features

  • 🚘 New weapon and vehicle

  • 📅 Update out July 21

After almost two years without any next-gen upgrades for PUBG, it’s a relief to finally see the game take advantage of the Xbox Series X and PS5’s capabilities, albeit in a limited way. The game currently drops to 1080p when playing at 60fps, resulting in noticeable shimmering and distracting aliasing artifacts.

New map: Deston 🗺️

Deston is the game’s 9th map and sees players battle it out in a near-future, ravaged world. It’s 8x8 km, which means it’s the same size as Erangel and Miramar. The map contains several diverse biomes: a flooded downtown, a murky swamp, clear coasts, beautiful mountains, and towering skyscrapers.

New features: Ascender, security doors, fuel pump ⛽

Deston contains some exclusive new features for players to enjoy. The Ascender lets you scale skyscrapers in seconds; the Fuel Pump can be used to refill your vehicle or destroyed to create a large explosion; and locked security doors contain high-tier items, if you can find a key.

New weapon: 012 💥

A high-capacity weapon, the 012 is the world’s fastest shotgun. The 012 is effective in close-range and mid-range combat thanks to its high volume of fire. The 012 is only available on the new Deston map.

New vehicle: Airboat 🚢

The Airboat can travel on land and water, meaning you won’t need to worry about switching vehicles depending on the terrain. The Airboat can carry up to five players and is available on the new Deston map.
