Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has announced its working on five titles, including a new The Witcher trilogy, a multiplayer Witcher game, a brand new IP, and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
The studio shared codenames and brief descriptions of each of the upcoming games during its Group Strategy Update, showcasing the type of transparency we’re not really used to seeing from developers.
CD Projekt summarized the five games it’s currently developing on Twitter:
Orion: “Orion is a codename for our next Cyberpunk game, which will take the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe.”
Polaris: “Polaris is a codename for the next installment in The Witcher series of games, which we recently announced was in pre-production. It is the beginning of a new saga: we aim to release two more Witcher games after Polaris, creating a new AAA RPG trilogy.”
Canis Majoris: “Canis Majoris is a full-fledged Witcher game, separate to the new Witcher saga starting with Polaris. It will be developed by an external studio headed by experienced developers who have worked on past Witcher games.”
Sirius: “Sirius is a codename for the game developed by Molasses Flood, set in The Witcher universe and created with support from CDPR. It will differ from our past productions, offering multiplayer gameplay on top of a single-player experience including a campaign with quests and a story.”
Hadar: “Hadar is a codename for a third, entirely distinct IP, created from scratch within CDPR. The project is in the earliest stages of the creative process, which means we are not developing any game yet, but working exclusively on the foundation for this new setting.”
In the video above, CD Projekt Red CFO Piotr Nielubowicz admitted the team had “learned its lessons” from the Cyberpunk 2077 launch and “pushed for changes.”
Nielubowicz said CD Projekt Red has developed a healthy sustainable working environment, uses more agile working ways of working, and said that the move to Epic Game’s Unreal Engine should boost productivity.
Back from the brink
After a disastrous launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has since sold 20 million copies. The game was riddled with bugs and ran woefully on last-gen consoles like PS4 and Xbox One. However, after several updates, the game has largely been fixed and has seen a recent resurgence thanks to the Netflix anime, Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners.
Fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are still eagerly awaiting the game’s PS5 and Xbox Series X update, due this year, but it’s pleasing to see so many projects are on the way, including a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 which should right the wrongs on the first game’s fumbled launch.
