Best Buy: Asus ROG Xbox Ally X - $999

Microsoft has made some large changes to its shiny Asus ROG Xbox Ally handhelds in a hefty update for the product, some six months after its launch.

In a new Xbox Wire post, Microsoft says the updates aim to bring “an improved experience, especially when your device is docked to external TVs and monitors”, and true to its word, there are plenty of optimizations when playing your ROG Xbox Ally on a big screen.

For instance, when docking the handheld, it’ll default to the TV display now, and if applicable, you’ll get the optimizations afforded with modern gaming TVs, such as Auto Low Latency Mode and similar game-mode enhancements alongside options such as HDR and VRR support if the handheld is used with compatible Asus docks.

In addition, Microsoft has added a feature that if you’ve got a controller paired to the Xbox Ally and you use the handheld docked, then the controller will act as the means of using the handheld. If you’ve got more than one paired, then this’ll work for multiplayer and co-op titles.

Microsoft had previously touted Auto Super Resolution would be coming to the ROG Xbox Ally X and has finally brought it in preview for Xbox Insiders. The idea is that when the console is docked, it’ll deliver “1440p-like detail alongside smooth framerates on larger screens”, and there is Game Bar integration to give players the choice of how it’s implemented in titles.

There have also been other incremental updates, such as expanding the support for super wideband audio to the Xbox Ally with compatible headsets that support Bluetooth LE audio, and enhanced rumble and haptics for more detailed feedback.

New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has admitted that the price of Microsoft’s upcoming Project Helix, the codename for the next Xbox console, will be affected by the ongoing memory crisis.

In an interview with Stephen Totilo’s Game File (as spotted by Game Developer), Sharma was asked if memory shortages would impact the “timeline” of the next-gen hybrid console.

In response, she stated that memory costs will affect both “pricing” and “availability” of the console, and denied sharing a launch timeline for the device, given that “the world’s pretty dynamic.”

This news comes after an open letter from Sharma and Xbox’s EVP Matt Booty noted that one of the gaming division’s key goals is to “deliver Project Helix to lead in performance and play your console and PC games” as it mulls over how to revive Xbox’s fortunes with the potential return of exclusive games and more besides.

The memory crisis has already heavily affected the hardware industry, not only raising component prices for SSDs, RAM and GPUs, but having the knock-on effect of messing around with everyone from Valve to Sony.

For instance, it’s pretty well documented that it has played havoc with the Steam Machine’s price, plus Valve’s refusal to commit to a release date for both the Steam Machine and Steam Frame beyond the vague “2026” window.

Likewise, on the console side, Sony has cited “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” for its recent hefty PS5 price rise that saw the PS5 Pro rise to $900, and the PS5 Standard and Digital models rise to $650 and $600, respectively.

As well as affecting pricing, Sharma also stated that the memory crisis will affect the availability of Project Helix, which is why Microsoft hasn’t committed to a hard and fast release date or even a window just yet.

The hybrid console is currently tipped to release in either 2027 or 2028, by which time the memory crisis could leave hardware in an entirely different place, although we’ll have to wait and see as to how all of this affects Xbox’s grand hardware plan.

Microsoft could be set to revive Xbox exclusive games, as it makes some wholesale changes to its gaming division.

As per a new Xbox Wire post that takes the form of an open letter to Xbox employees worldwide from new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and EVP Matt Booty, the pair have put forward some grand ideas to revive the fortunes of Microsoft’s gaming division.

The crux of the letter is that they want the Xbox division to focus on daily active players and prioritize four key elements – hardware, content, experiences, and services.

The pair outline key issues with the current way Xbox operates, noting that “players are frustrated” as a result of things such as “new feature drops on console have been less frequent” and that the Xbox “presence on PC isn’t strong enough”.

Likewise, “pricing is getting harder for people to keep up with. And core experiences like search, discovery, social, and personalization still feel too fragmented. Developers and publishers are asking for more, too: better tools, better insights, and a platform that helps them grow faster.”

The light at the end of the tunnel for Xbox isn’t “the same model that got Xbox to where it is today” according to the pair, and is rather the idea of Microsoft wanting to “build a global platform that connects players and creators everywhere” with the console at the core.

As per Sharma and Booty, “Xbox will be built to be affordable, personal, and open”, while offering “flexible pricing so it’s easy to get started and keep playing”.

Moreover, “the experience will adapt to you, letting you customize how you play, helping you find what you’ll love, and connecting you with the right people.”

As much as this may seem like a lot of talk and no action, we have already seen some steps taken, such as the lowering of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s monthly cost to $23 a month from the previous $30 a month – at the expense of new Call of Duty titles not arriving on Game Pass on launch day.

There are also plans afoot for a new, more customizable Game Pass tier where fans can choose which elements they’d like, alongside an entry-level tier that’s set to bundle elements with a Discord subscription.

As part of one of the four key pillars the pair want Xbox to deliver on, they make specific reference to the goal to “deliver Project Helix to lead in performance and play your console and PC games”, confirming that the upcoming Project Helix will be a hybrid console.

Microsoft is also “reevaluating” its approach to Xbox console exclusive games or release windows, according to Booty and Sharma.

A long part of the console wars between Microsoft and PlayStation over the last three generations, we’ve seen the end of exclusivity, with former Xbox exclusives, including Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, becoming best sellers on the PS5, and even Helldivers 2 ended up on Xbox after a period of exclusivity on the PS5.

Microsoft has announced some special edition peripherals to tie into the upcoming release of Forza Horizon 6.

As per a new Xbox Wire post, Microsoft is dropping a vibrant special edition controller and a matching wireless headset that takes inspiration from the game’s setting of Japan.

Going into more detail, the post notes that the controller’s mix of cyan blue, volt green, hot pink and silver and its core design elements take inspiration from the “Touge roads of Japan. Touge – winding, narrow roads found across Japanese mountainsides – are hailed as the birthplace for drifting, so a top-down view of these exhilarating routes was the perfect homage to Japanese street racing”. It also features Forza and Horizon logos across the chassis for more detail.

The headset features a similar colorway, which Microsoft says “continues that overarching theme of the Horizon Festival, decorated with flashy transparent cyan, volt green and hot pink. The headset was created with the Forza super fan in mind, with special touches like the hot pink logo invoking pit crew aesthetics, and racetrack-inspired graphics inside the ear cups. The addition of custom sound effects enhances the experience with a more personalized feel.”

Forza Horizon Limited Edition Controller and Headset: price

Microsoft has attached an $89.99 price tag to the Forza Horizon Limited Edition controller and a $134.99 price tag to the headset.

That’s quite a hefty increase over the normal controller and headset prices for a purely cosmetic difference, although it isn’t unreasonable considering what we’ve seen Sony charge for its special-edition controllers.

Microsoft has also teamed up with 8BitDo to offer a Charging Dock for the Forza Horizon 6 Limited Edition controller, which costs $34.99 and ships on June 8, 2026.

Both the controller and headset are available for pre-order right now in the US, and given that these are limited edition items, you’ll likely want to get your order in pretty quickly to get it on its release date.

Both the controller and headset carry a release date of May 19, 2026. It’s also the same day that Forza Horizon 6 drops, so ideal timing.

Recently, it’s been Sony that has been releasing special edition products that tie-in to upcoming game releases, such as for the God of War 20th Anniversary and 007 First Light, plus others for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach and a range of accessories for Ghost of Yotei.

Microsoft has cut the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate after it raised the price by 50% late last year. A subscription to Microsoft’s top tier of Xbox Game Pass will now cost $22.99 per month, down from the previous price of $29.99.

PC Game Pass is also getting cut, and will now cost $13.99 a month instead of $16.49. Both price changes are effective immediately.

In a post on Xbox Wire, Microsoft explained that the price change comes with one caveat: no more Call of Duty at launch. Instead, the popular first-person shooter will come to Xbox Game Pass the following holiday season (about a year later), while existing Call of Duty titles already in the library will continue to be available.

An Xbox Game Pass Ultimate price cut was heavily rumored after a memo leaked from new CEO Asha Sharma that said the service had “become too expensive for players”. Clearly, a decision has been made to bring back lapsed subscribers, though many would like to see the price cut further in favor of other “perks” being removed like free V-Bucks for Fortnite.

It’s also worth noting that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is still more expensive than it was a few years ago, even with the new price cut. However, it’s refreshing to see a subscription service drop in price for once, instead of continuing to climb to previously unthinkable levels.

The decision to lower the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate comes ahead of Forza Horizon 6’s release, which is due to be released on May 19, 2026. The Forza Horizon series remains one of Xbox’s most important and popular franchises, and will undoubtedly lead to a small boost in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.

Since Sharma became CEO of Xbox, we’ve seen several consumer-friendly decisions come into effect, as Microsoft tries to reposition the Xbox brand from the brink of irrelevancy. Long-requested features are coming, like changes to Xbox Achievements, and Sharma killed off the company’s controversial “This is an Xbox” campaign. We also got confirmation of the next Xbox, codenamed Xbox Project Helix, which aims to combine the best of console and PC into one package.

The Xbox team at Microsoft is reportedly having “very big discussions” about bringing back exclusive games after pursuing a multiplatform strategy.

According to Windows Central’s Jez Corden (thanks, Pure Xbox), internal discussions are taking place now that Xbox has a new CEO in Asha Sharma, who has already introduced some positive changes.

Speaking on The XB2 podcast, Corden said: “There are very very very big discussions about the exclusivity stuff going on right now. They do recognise the value - it’s just about what kind of company you want to be, at the end of the day. Do you want to be an ecosystem company first, or do you aspire to be a publishing company first?”

Corden also replied to a comment on X that said exclusives aren’t coming back. Corden conceded that while Call of Duty and Forza are unlikely to become exclusive again, there’s a chance single-player games could.

“Cod and Forza? No chance of going exclusive. But some single player stuff especially? I think it’ll happen.”

Microsoft slowly moved away from exclusive games, bringing titles that were previously only available on Xbox consoles and PC to PS5 and Nintendo Switch. At first, it was games that were many years old, with the promise that tentpole titles like Halo, Forza, and Gears of War wouldn’t come to PlayStation. However, that position quickly changed.

The move to go multiplatform remains extremely controversial. While it may boost Microsoft’s bottom line by bringing in more revenue, many argue it’s devalued the Xbox brand. Without exclusives, there’s no compelling reason to buy an Xbox console, and hardware sales have continued to decline significantly year-on-year.

There’s been a flurry of pleasing changes at Xbox since Microsoft replaced Phil Spencer with Asha Sharma as the new CEO, and a price cut for Xbox Game Pass could be next.

In a leaked memo shared by The Verge, Sharma reportedly admitted that Xbox Game Pass has become “too expensive for players” and that Microsoft needs to deliver a “better value equation”.

Microsoft raised the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate significantly last year, and has introduced new tiers which only made what was once a simple to understand system needlessly convoluted.

The price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate increased by 50% to $30 per month, which Microsoft tried to offset by including more games, day one releases, and an improved version of Xbox Cloud Gaming.

However, it seemingly didn’t work, as Microsoft’s new CEO admits it’s become too expensive in the memo.

“Short term, Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation,” Sharma says in the leaked memo. “Long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around.”

Many speculated that adding Call of Duty into Xbox Game Pass is one of the biggest factors to why Microsoft raised the price of its subscription service.

Microsoft’s deal to purchase Activision Blizzard may have made it the biggest video game publisher in the world, but it hasn’t delivered a suite of unmissable games or many benefits for Xbox owners. The same can be said for its acquisition of Bethesda.

Whether an Xbox Game Pass price cut is coming remains to be seen, but it’s encouraging that Microsoft is at least aware that perhaps its new pricing model isn’t working as intended.

We’ve seen Sharma’s short reign introduce several improvements to the Xbox user experience and brand, including changes to Xbox Achievements and killing off the “This is an Xbox” ad campaign. Sharma also confirmed the existence of Xbox Project Helix.

Microsoft’s charm offensive to win back the hearts and minds of Xbox gamers shows no signs of slowing down, as it’s now turning its attention to improving Achievements.

Xbox Achievements have largely been ignored in recent years, with vague promises that changes were coming. However, we’re now getting some pleasing improvements.

As announced on Xbox Wire, Achievements have received a visual refresh, giving them a new look and feel. The icons have been updated for when you unlock a classic or rare achievement, and notifications will also match your custom color.

Perhaps the biggest change, and one that fans have been demanding since Achievements first arrived in 2005, is the ability to hide certain games from your Achievement history. Hidden games will still count towards your total Gamerscore, but you can now hide those titles you barely played or simply regret booting up.

You’ll also be able to highlight any games that you’ve 100% completed. Games where you’ve earned every Xbox Achievement will stand out with a bold border, and you’ll also be able to filter titles by completed games. It might not be quite as appealing as Sony’s Platinum Trophy system, but it’s a start.

These changes are available for Xbox Insiders to test. The updated Achievements join other improvements coming to Xbox, including custom user colors, Quick Resume settings, and more Groups on Home.

New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma shared on X that “a dedicated team” was created to “focus on fan feedback”.

Microsoft has announced a brand new Xbox Games Showcase for 2026, and it’ll be followed by a deep dive into a returning fan favourite series for the console platform.

As per a new post on the Xbox Wire, this year’s Xbox Games Showcase takes place on June 7, and will include the usual “first gameplay looks and huge news on upcoming titles from our first-party studios across the Xbox family, as well as our third-party partners around the globe – from the biggest franchises to soon-to-be indie darlings”.

You should be able to watch the Games Showcase at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST on June 7 on the official Xbox YouTube and Twitch channels, plus on Facebook.

It’ll immediately be followed by a special feature on the new Gears of War: E-Day title, which Microsoft says will take “players into the start of Emergence Day, offering new details, gameplay and insights about the hugely anticipated origin story to the Gears of War saga.”

The new Gears of War is acting as a prequel to the original series, and is set some 14 years before the start of the other games – being first announced back in June 2024, this has been a long time coming.

Microsoft also announced a return for Xbox FanFest to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of Xbox, which will “include a look back at the last 25 years, alongside a forward view of what’s next”. It’s unclear what this may include, although it’d be nice to get some more Project Helix news to wet the whistle.

The Xbox Wire post also notes that the Xbox Games Showcase and Gears of War: E-Day double feature is kicking off a week’s worth of coverage on the Xbox Wire and Xbox’s YouTube channel about the games that’ll be shown off at the showcase and more besides.

Microsoft is also teasing brand-new reveals, world premieres, and Xbox Game Pass announcements, so it sounds like it will be well worth tuning in.

Will we hear anything more about Xbox Project Helix? Probably not, but Microsoft hasn’t specifically ruled it out in its announcement post.

Microsoft has slashed the price of the Xbox Series X by a whopping 50%, though not everyone can take advantage of this limited-time deal.

Some fans have noticed that a “Just For You” offer is available (thanks, Pure Xbox), knocking over $250 off Microsoft’s flagship console. The Xbox Series X Digital Edition is 50% off, bringing the price down to $300.

The offer appears to be targeting Xbox One S and Xbox One X players who may not have upgraded to Microsoft’s new console yet, and it appears the discount varies depending on the user. Microsoft says the discount is “based on factors such as subscription, usage, or purchase, behavior”.

To see if you’re eligible for the offer, you’ll need to head to the Microsoft Store on your console and go to “Consoles and Accessories” from the dashboard. Click on “Xbox Consoles”, and you can see whether you’ve got a personalized deal.

The deal is welcome, especially as Microsoft didn’t offer any meaningful discounts during Black Friday 2025. It also didn’t help that we’ve seen two price increases on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, making both consoles a much harder sell.

Microsoft has heard the calls of Xbox fans and brought some new, highly requested features to the platform with a new update for Xbox Insiders, which will later roll out to general users after they’ve been thoroughly vetted.

New grouping options

As per a new Xbox Wire post, Microsoft is adding things such as the ability to have more groups on the Xbox home screen. This is going from the current two, all the way up to ten.

It’s also going to be easier to manage the groups you have, and to reorder games on the home screen.

Custom colors

For added personalization fun, you can now finally create a custom color for the UI, rather than just having a range of predetermined hues to make your Xbox experience unique.

The colors will show in places such as the accents around highlighted menu tiles and in the bottom left corner of My Games and Apps. You’ll also see a subtle amount of your chosen color in the Guide section of the Xbox UI.

Microsoft says that there are “a few guardrails in place” to keep the color consistent across the console. If you switch back to a system color, then it’ll also save your last custom selection so you can return to it later with ease.

Custom colors will be viewable by other Xbox Insiders at the moment, and will roll out to everyone beginning in April with a new update.

Quick Resume settings changes

The new update also brings changes to the clever Quick Resume feature on Xbox Series consoles that leaves your game in a suspended state when you exit. Even turning the console off and jumping back into the same game brings you right back to where to left off, thanks to Quick Resume

Microsoft is now allowing users to disable Quick Resume on a per-game basis, as user feedback has indicated that certain games don’t always boot up in a pleasant manner with Quick Resume in play.

The option to disable it for certain games will be available in the ‘More options’ menu on a game tile in the Quick Resume group. Selecting the ‘Manage Quick Resume’ option will bring up the toggle to turn it off, as will going to the game tile and selecting ‘Manage game and add-ons’ from the ensuing menu.

Profile badges now appear in the Guide

A smaller change that’s also part of the new update is that when you open the Guide to look at your own profile or someone else’s, it’ll now show the five most recently unlocked badges. This makes them easier to spot when you’re browsing profiles.

The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X is getting a long-awaited upgrade in April, as Microsoft announced the Xbox handheld will soon make use of its Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) technology.

Automatic Super Resolution uses AI to upscale games in real time, promising to make them look sharper while increasing performance as the game runs from a lower internal resolution.

That might sound extremely similar to other upscaling technologies, such as Nvidia’s DLSS. However, the benefit of Auto SR is that it can run directly on the device from the Ryzen AI chip inside the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X as its an OS-level feature. This should equate to less GPU strain and more battery life, which is crucial for handhelds.

The technology also doesn’t require retroactive developer support, while Nvidia DLSS and AMD’s FSR require per-game integration by developers.

It’s fair to say that Auto SR won’t offer the same image quality as DLSS, but it’ll prove useful if no other upscaler is supported by a game.

Microsoft showed off Auto SR during GDC 2026, and with a release date of April planned, it won’t be long until Asus ROG Xbox Ally X gamers can test the feature for themselves.

In our Asus ROG Xbox Ally X review, we said Microsoft’s collaborative handheld with Asus delivered on almost all fronts but its $999 price tag was a hard pill to swallow unless you’re dead-set on playing more games on a handheld at higher settings.

Microsoft has apparently ended its polarizing “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign, which basically tried to convince gamers that their phone, PC, TV, VR headset, laptop, or whatever device could run Xbox Cloud Gaming was the equivalent of owning a console.

Unsurprisingly, most Xbox fans hated the campaign, as it felt like it devalued the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles, which haven’t exactly flown off the shelves. As of writing, the YouTube video for the advert has 9.4k likes but 7.4k dislikes.

The tongue-in-cheek nature of the ads may have been well-intentioned, but being able to access Xbox games on a device doesn’t make it an Xbox – at least not to the majority of people – and it seems like Microsoft may have got the message.

It looks like Microsoft has quietly done away with the controversial campaign, as if you search for the “This is an Xbox” tagline on Xbox, you won’t find anything. This could mean the ads have simply run their course, or it may have been an early decision from Microsoft’s new CEO of gaming, Asha Sharma, to end the marketing push.

While Microsoft is steadfast in its approach to make Xbox games accessible across multiple devices, calling an Amazon Fire TV stick “an Xbox” was too much for most people. An Xbox is, and should be, a console that sits under your TV. The rest are simply devices that allow you to access Xbox games in a different way.

Microsoft will need to reposition Xbox Project Helix, its next-generation hardware, as something gamers need to buy. That’ll prove to be a tricky task, especially after the reputational damage the Xbox brand has suffered this generation. However, if Microsoft is no longer classifying everything as an Xbox, that’s at least a start.

Microsoft could revive its Xbox backwards compatibility program for the 25th anniversary of the platform.

That’s been teased by Xbox’s VP of next generation, Jason Ronald, at a keynote at this year’s GDC conference, where Xbox Project Helix was discussed. If true, this would revive an effort Microsoft stopped in November 2021 after re-releasing 76 games.

Granted, this wasn’t confirmed outright, but Ronald said in the keynote that Microsoft’s game preservation team would “release some iconic games from the past that are now going to be able to be played in entirely new ways”.

This is a vague statement, and could mean anything from remasters to brand new backwards compatible games.

Another thought (thanks, Pure Xbox) is that it could mean backwards compatibility for Xbox games running on PC or the Asus ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. At the same GDC event, Microsoft announced ‘Xbox Mode’ for Windows 11, which sees the Xbox Full Screen Experience mode come to all types of Windows 11 PCs, including desktops, laptops and more, which suggests a tighter integration between Xbox and PC.

In any case, it seems classic games are on the agenda for Microsoft to celebrate Xbox’s 25th anniversary – it had been previously teased that the brand was expecting big things to celebrate some important milestones.

Moreover, Microsoft said it was “committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. As part of our 25th anniversary later this year, we’ll be rolling out new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past.”

More details about Xbox Project Helix have emerged during GDC 2026, as Microsoft has outlined its plans for its next-gen console, giving us a better understanding of what we can expect.

With Xbox Project Helix tipped for a 2027 or 2028 release date, we’re rounding up everything you need to know about Microsoft’s next console and will update this page with more information in the months to come.

Xbox Project Helix: Microsoft’s next big gamble

Microsoft says that Xbox Project Helix is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games”, breaking the barrier that existed between the two platforms for decades.

It means that you’ll be able to play games from Steam, the Epic Games Store, and also enjoy your back catalog of existing Xbox games you’ve amassed over the years.

The pitch sounds promising and refreshingly pro-consumer. However, like with the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X – which has arguably been a test case for the idea – it’s harder to execute than it sounds.

Microsoft will also have to compete with Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine, which brings the console-like and widely beloved SteamOS to a small form factor PC that acts like a console (albeit one that’s aimed at Steam users), and it’s due to launch this year.

Sony will also be looking to outdo Microsoft yet again with the PS6, which sounds like it will stick to the traditional console formula, offering exclusive games that are designed solely for one piece of hardware.

Even if Microsoft nails the concept that it’s pitching with Xbox Project Helix, there’s no guarantee that it will be a success or resonate with consumers as the space is arguably more competitive than it’s ever been, and Microsoft is entering the next-generation in perhaps its weakest ever position.

Xbox Project Helix: release date

During GDC 2026, Microsoft’s VP of next generation, Jason Ronald, revealed that developers will get their hands on alpha versions of Xbox Project Helix in 2027. That strongly implies that a release date of 2027 for Microsoft’s next console could be difficult, especially as developers only have an incomplete version of the Project Helix dev kit to work with.

If dev kits roll out at the start of the year, then a typical November release date could be on the cards. However, it’ll all depend on how easy it is for developers to get their games running on Microsoft’s new hardware. If it proves tricky, or Microsoft doesn’t update its dev tools quickly enough, expect a 2028 release date for Project Helix.

Xbox Project Helix: specs

Microsoft’s CEO of gaming, Asha Sharma, said Xbox Project Helix will “lead in performance”, implying the console will be more powerful – at least on paper – than Sony’s PS6. Microsoft is partnering with AMD once again, and has said that Project Helix is powered by a “custom AMD SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR”.

In a post on Xbox Wire, Jason Ronald said that Project Helix will deliver “an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability”. A slide from GDC 2026 showed how Project Helix will innovate in the following ways:

Xbox Project Helix: price

It’s impossible to know how much the next Xbox console will cost, but there’s no denying it’s expected to be significantly more expensive than the typical $499.99 price we’ve grown accustomed to.

After all, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles cost more today than they did in 2020, and Microsoft’s goal of creating a console/PC hybrid means it’ll need to run some of the most demanding PC games.

If that wasn’t evidence enough, the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, a handheld, cost $999.99 at launch and the PS5 Pro, a mid-generation refresh of the PlayStation 5, is currently $750.

With that in mind, it’s likely that Xbox Project Helix will command a price tag of at least $999.99, if not more, when it eventually releases. And that’s if the memory crisis has subsided by then.

Xbox Project Helix: backward compatibility

Many will be wondering whether the new Xbox will play all your old games. After all, dedicated Xbox fans will have built up a library of hundreds of games and invested thousands of dollars into the ecosystem.

Thankfully, it sounds like Project Helix will support full backward compatibility with prior generations of Xbox. Ronald said that the team is “committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come” and also teased that “as part of our 25th anniversary later this year, we’ll be rolling out new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our past.”

Xbox Project Helix: will it have exclusive games?

The simple answer is no. Microsoft is continuing its strategy of making its games available on as many platforms as possible, something Ronald reiterated during his Xbox Developer Summit keynote address at GDC 2026.

“Players should be able to play these games [Xbox games] and more across devices, whether through purchases, subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass, or from other leading storefronts. Xbox Play Anywhere allows your games to move with you seamlessly across screens. Your progress carries forward, the time you’ve invested stays with you, and you only need to buy a game once. The Xbox Play Anywhere game catalog has grown to over 1,500 games, and 500 development teams have already shipped games with Xbox Play Anywhere.”

It means we can expect future first-party releases from Xbox Studios to release on other platforms like the PS5 and PS6, as Microsoft gambles on players wanting access to their games across multiple devices, instead of being drawn into an ecosystem by games they can’t play anywhere else.

Ahead of GDC 2026, the new Microsoft CEO of gaming, Asha Sharma, has shared some new details about the next Xbox.

Codenamed Xbox Project Helix, Sharma confirmed on X that Microsoft’s next foray into the console market will adopt a hybrid approach, and will be capable of playing Xbox games and PC games.

Sharma also said that the next Xbox will “lead in performance”, suggesting that Microsoft wants to deliver the most powerful console on the market.

Obviously, having the most capable box doesn’t guarantee success. We’ve seen countless consoles that aren’t as powerful as the competition out-sell their rivals. Case in point, the PS5 and Xbox Series X: Sony’s console may not be as strong on paper, but it’s obliterated Microsoft’s offering this generation.

It’s long been rumored that the next Xbox would play Xbox games and PC games, though I’d argue they’re one of the same, unless we’re talking about backwards compatibility.

Similar to Microsoft’s approach with the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, it’s likely the new Xbox will let you play and buy games from different store fronts, including Steam and the Epic Games Store.

However, Microsoft still has work to do if it wants to make the experience feel more console-like. The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X may have been an improvement for Windows 11 on a handheld, but it still falls short compared to the ease-of-use that SteamOS or even an Xbox console interface offers.

With Xbox hardware sales dropping every quarter, and Microsoft giving up on exclusivity to pursue a multiplatform approach, the next Xbox console will need to offer something truly compelling for gamers to buy it. Price will be key, but it’ll need to differentiate itself from the competition in a meaningful way.

Countless people have shared their opinions about Microsoft’s decision to appoint Asha Sharma as the new head of Xbox. But perhaps one that carries the most weight is that of Xbox co-founder, Seamus Blackley.

Blackley, who first proposed the idea of Microsoft launching a console and was instrumental in the Xbox brand being created, believes Asha Sharma’s appointment will lead to Xbox being “sunsetted” in the future.

Speaking to Gamesbeat, Blackley said: “Xbox, like a lot of businesses that aren’t the core AI business, is being sunsetted... They don’t say that, but that’s what’s happening. I expect that the new CEO, Asha Sharma, her job is going to be as a palliative care doctor who slides Xbox gently into the night.”

Blackley also lamented the fact Microsoft hasn’t hired someone who is a gamer at heart, as Sharma has openly admitted she isn’t one.

“It would have been shocking if they had somebody in there in a meaningful role who was passionate about games, passionate about the creator-driven business of games, because it would be in direct conflict with everything else Microsoft is doing,” said Blackley.

Microsoft’s obsession with AI is also at total odds with video games, Blackley said, and that the company is “now about enabling its customers by enabling AI to drive things. That’s at odds with the auteur model of any art, but specifically of games.”

Sharma recently shared her Gamertag after online commenters requested it, and it showed that the new Xbox CEO only started to play games in the last month or so. When asked what her favorite games were, Sharma said Halo, Valheim and Goldeneye. Some have accused Sharma of using AI to respond to people’s comments, an allegation which she has denied.

Sharma’s appointment took many people by surprise after Phil Spencer’s retirement and Sarah Bond’s resignation. Sharma joined Microsoft in 2024 and was the head of Core AI. Sharma said her three commitments as the CEO of Xbox include delivering great games, returning Xbox to what people remember, and focusing on the future of play.

Microsoft has introduced a clever postgame recap feature for PC users as part of a new update.

As per a new blog post, Microsoft has said that Xbox Insiders who are enrolled in the PC Gaming Preview can try postgame recaps on the Xbox PC app in Windows.

These recaps will pop up after you finish a play session that will highlight any important moments from your time gaming, such as captures taken, achievements unlocked and “relevant in-game events”, even including how long you played, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft stresses these recaps aren’t meant to be intrusive to the point they come up after every game, and should only come up “when they’re useful”. It says you’re most likely to see them when you take a capture through the Xbox Game Bar or unlock an achievement, for instance.

It’s also likely to happen on your first time playing a game, where you may see “a short check‑in and recommendations for other games you might enjoy”, according to the blog post.

Microsoft also says you will be able to turn off individual types of recaps in the settings of the Xbox app, and the app may run in the system tray while you play so it can show you a recap when you’re done.

The blog post also says this has been done to “minimize memory and performance impact”, so it won’t impact your frame rate or utilization too much, hopefully if at all.
