The GTA 6 limited edition PS5 controller is proving to be extremely popular, but you’ve still got a chance to grab one if you missed out yesterday. Stock is still available at a few retailers, though the longer you wait, the more chance they will sell out for good.

The Grand Theft Auto IV Black Limited Edition is exclusive to the PlayStation Direct store and surprisingly still in stock. The Grand Theft Auto IV White Limited Edition is available at several retailers, though not everyone has stock.

Sony has announced two GTA 6-themed PS5 controllers to celebrate the upcoming launch of Rockstar’s long-awaited sequel.

There are two options to choose from: the Grand Theft Auto IV Black Limited Edition and the Grand Theft Auto IV White Limited Edition.

The controllers capture the energy of Vice City’s iconic nightlife and feature custom palm tree details molded directly into the controller, adding a unique element.

9:48 AM: I’m not sure that State of Play will have done much to win angry PlayStation fans over, honestly. We didn’t get any big new announcements, and there’s still no sign of Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. God of War Laufey was also absent. Most of the games shown we already knew about, too, but at least a lot of them got firm release dates. How did you rate today’s State of Play?

9:45 AM: And that’s your lot unless you’re a Final Fantasy fan, as we’re getting an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, including an all-important release date. It’s out April 8, 2027.

9:41 AM: Oh, new PlayStation hardware! Sony is flexing its marketing muscle with two GTA 6 limited edition controllers. Expect these to be popular. There’s a black or white option to choose from.

9:39 AM: Horror fans, rejoice. Until Dawn 2 is shaping up to be another enjoyable horror adventure, and we don’t have long to wait. It’s out January 28, 2027.

9:38 AM: Gran Turismo 7, arguably the best game on PS5, will be getting a Spec IV update later this year. It’s split into two parts and will release in October and December this year. Expect new tracks like the SUGO Circuit from Japan, and the classic Autumn Ring. A total of 12 cars will also be added, along with a family mode that makes the game more accessibility to younger players.

9:35 AM: Saros is getting more modes like a New Game+ and a multiplayer score mode. New accessibility features are also being added. It’s a free update, too.

9:34 AM: Some classics now for PS Plus. Megaman X Command Mission from PS2, Dino Crisis 2 from PSOne, and the first entry in the Ratchet & Clank series are all coming.

9:34 AM: A jazzy first look at a new third-person action game. Reminds me of Bayonetta, but of course it isn’t. It’s called Rhapsody in Scarlet, and you can get a closer look during the State of Play Japan after the show.

9:31 AM: Konami’s RPG that was shown off earlier this year returns for another look. Rev.NOIR is another one that’s due out in 2027.

9:27 AM: The last of the three indie games is Keeper from Double Fine Productions, which recently regained its independence from Microsoft. I’ve heard good things about this one, but not sure when I’ll ever get around to playing it. It’s out today.

9:26 AM: Uncanyon looks is a puzzle, top-down adventure game that looks rather charming. It’s out in 2027.

9:24 AM: A spotlight on three indie games, all of which are coming to PS5, of course. Hunter’s Moon is out October 26, 2026.

9:22 AM: A Gundam game now. I’ll be honest, I know nothing about Gundam other than visiting the super cool statue when I was in Japan. I know there’s been plenty of games, but this one looks pretty impressive on first glance. Gundam: Rogue Orbit releases on March 5, 2027.

9:21 AM: Final Fantasy Resonance is the first Final Fantasy in Square Enix’s HD-2D engine – and yeah, I’m a sucker for this art style. You also get to fight a massive Sephiroth, which is cool. It’s out October 22, 2026, and a demo is available today!

9:19 AM: Hey, this is nice. We’re finally getting a LEGO PlayStation. It’s a replica of the original PlayStation. Ape Escape and Gran Turismo dioramas are found inside, and the disc tray even opens. It even includes a controller. Nice.

9:17 AM: The chat really wants to see Destiny 3, but that wish hasn’t been fulfilled just yet as we’re getting a new trailer for Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown, an expansion that launches on October 15, 2026.

9:16 AM: Time for something a little different. How about a game where you play as a shark? Man Eater 2 is out next year.

9:15 AM: 4A Games’ next entry in the Metro series is up next as we get a closer look at Metro 2039. It’s visually impressive, and there’s not long to wait. It’s out February 4, 2027.

9:12 AM: Capcom is probably the best publisher out there right now, but it’s fair to say they missed the mark with Monster Hunter: Wilds. Clearly, they’re not giving up on it, as we’re seeing the new expansion, Ascendance. It’s out sometime next year.

9:09 AM: As I predicted, it’s time for a look at Ghost of Yotei’s upcoming DLC called Most Wanted. You’ll need to level up your characters, take on challenging fights, use your abilities and… oh, you can play as Jin from the first game! It’s out October 1, 2026, and will be included in the upcoming Complete Edition.

9:05 AM: Okay, an actual game, and it’s Marvel’s Wolverine. We also know the State of Play will last around 45 minutes, which is plenty of time to get fans on side. Wolverine is out September 15, 2026, and is exclusive to PS5.

9:02 AM: The show has begun with a live-action segment with zombies jumping off a building to their doom. Turns out it wasn’t an advertisement for a game, but for the upcoming Resident Evil movie that comes out September 18. Weird way to start the show.

8:55 AM: If you’re watching on YouTube, you may have noticed a running theme in the chat. “No disc, no buy!” and several variations of that sentiment. Sony seems to be committed to doing away with discs for good, but the backlash hasn’t subsided. It probably doesn’t help that Xbox just revealed its disc-to-digital program, which lets you turn your physical copies into digital ones.

8:47 AM: Consider this your last warning before the show begins. In my experience, it’s a good time to hit the bathroom, grab a drink and snack, and get settled in before the event kicks off. Come to think of it, I better take my advice before I forget!

8:24 AM: We’re just over 30 minutes away from Sony’s State of Play broadcast! It’s a great opportunity for Sony to capitalize on the hype of GTA 6, which has led to the PS5 Pro selling out at most retailers. Remember: GTA 6 “plays best on PS5” according to Sony. Maybe we’ll get another look at Grand Theft Auto 6 today? Fingers crossed.

7:41 AM: What can we expect to see during today’s State of Play event? Well, the show will close with an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, but expect to see more of God of War Laufey, Marvel’s Wolverine, and maybe even Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Sony could give some games that it’s already released another push, too, including showing DLC for Ghost of Yotei and Saros.

6:52 AM: It’s been a rough time for PlayStation fans recently, with Sony announcing it will ditch discs in 2028 in favor of an all-digital future. However, today’s State of Play is a chance for the Japanese company to get PlayStation owners back on side, and we’ll be covering all the announcements right here.

The State of Play broadcast begins today at 6:00am PT / 9:00am ET / 2:00pm BST / 3:00pm CEST / 10:00pm JST. Sony hasn’t shared how long it will last, but a State of Play Japan will take place after the main presentation, which will include games from studios in Japan and Asia.

• 📺 PS5 users in the US can now access free, ad-supported live TV, featuring over 100 channels and on-demand content from providers like Amazon MGM Studios, Crunchyroll, and NBCUniversal

• 🆕 Sony plans to regularly update the service with new channels and content, with expansion plans to Canada and other regions in the future

• 🤷‍♂️ The feature evokes the early Xbox One focus on TV, and Sony hopes this new free offering will improve sentiment amidst ongoing criticism regarding their shift toward a digital-only future

PS5 owners in the US can now enjoy free ad-supported TV, with content included from Amazon MGM Studios, Crunchyroll, FOX, NBCUniversal, NFL Channel, UFC, and more.

Players can browse more than 100 live channels and a growing selection of on-demand entertainment, such as news, sports, and movies.

To access Live TV on the PS5 from the console’s home screen, go to the Media tab, select the ‘Live TV on PS5’ icon, and select ‘Sign In With My PlayStation Account’ to start watching.

Sony says that Live TV on PS5 will continue to evolve with regularly refreshed programming, new channels, and additional content over time. The service will also expand to Canada in the future, and other regions will be explored.

The introduction of live TV on PS5 is reminiscent of Microsoft’s infamous Xbox One reveal, where the company positioned TV as a standout feature for its new console. Eventually, the focus on TV was dropped, and the HDMI In input was removed on the Xbox One X model.

Sony will be hoping the addition of a free service wins back a few fans, as the backlash over the Japanese company’s decision to ditch discs for a digital-only future shows no sign of dying down.

About downloading PS Plus free games

The free PS Plus games for August 2026 no longer became available on September 1, 2026 (if you added them to your PlayStation games library before the cut-off date, you can continue to play them, don’t worry). Note: these PS Plus games don’t have to be downloaded; just add them to your PlayStation games library before they expire from the PlayStation Store.

The primary reason to get a PS Plus membership is online multiplayer, but these ‘free games’ have rounded out the value of Sony’s online service. It helps PlayStation Plus compete with Microsoft’s more robust offering (see our Xbox Game Pass Ultimate review and save $20 with our Xbox Game Pass discount code) which has become a Netflix-like on-demand gaming service. That’s why PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now have merged to form PlayStation Plus Premium, PlayStation Plus Extra, and PlayStation Plus Essential.

How to get the PS Plus free games

1. Get PlayStation Plus through this discount code to save $10 (you can’t stack multiple years anymore, but your pre-paid code won’t expire if you find the deal tempting. You’ll be able to turn off auto-renew and redeem it when it does expire

2. Go to the PlayStation Plus tab on the PlayStation Store on your console

3. Add each of the four games to your library (you don’t have to download them but you do need to add them to your library)

4. You can also download them by logging into the PlayStation Store through the web and adding them to your library that way (it will be faster for some people)

You’ll be able to add the PlayStation Plus free games for September to your library until October 5. On that date, new games will take over, and you’ll lose your chance to add these games to your PlayStation library. Adding the PS Plus games to your library doesn’t require downloading them and therefore doesn’t take up any hard drive or PS5 SSD storage space.

Why you shouldn’t wait on PS Plus free games

Should you buy PlayStation Plus today for these games? While online multiplayer is essential for some people, the free games for $79.99 a year MSRP (but $45 a year with a PlayStation Plus discount code) seems like good value if you play PS5 (if you don’t have a console yet, check out the Target PS5, and Amazon PS5 restock guides along with the Sony Direct queue guide). This is despite the fact you don’t know if the PS Plus free games will be any good month-to-month.

But here’s why you should get them right away: You won’t be able to add the September 2026 free PS Plus games to your library after October 5. My expert advice is that if you don’t have a PlayStation Plus membership, get it today or before the end of the month to claim all of the PlayStation games this month and the next, and for the following ten months.

Can I keep PS Plus free games forever?

As long as you’re subscribed to PlayStation Plus, you can continue playing any free games added to your library. If you cancel your PS Plus subscription, all the PS Plus free games and DLC become inaccessible.

There is a caveat: if you resubscribe to PlayStation Plus at any point, the free games added to your library will become playable again. So it’s worth getting PlayStation Plus if the free game is to your liking and start accumulating a nice collection.

Are PSVR 2 games ever part of the PS Plus free games list?

Sony has released PSVR games as part of its PS Plus free games membership perk before, and thankfully it’s now added PSVR 2 games to the lineup. However, you’ll need to be a PS Plus Premium member to access these games. Sony may have been pushed by Meta to offer free PSVR 2 games, which launched its own subscription service called Meta Horizon Plus.

Sony continues to inflame its relationship with PlayStation fans as a new email has been flagged that reminds PS5 owners that any digital software they purchase is a license, and not something they actually own.

The email couldn’t have been sent at a worse time, as it’s been received on the week protesters began their PS5 ‘blackout’, which urges PlayStation 5 owners to turn off their consoles for several days to push back against Sony’s decision to ditch discs forever in January 2028.

The email reads: “The Software is licensed to you, not sold. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and personal license to play or use the Software for your private, non-commercial use on the system or device it was intended for.”

Of course, while it may be all the rage to hate on Sony at the moment, it’s worth mentioning that Microsoft, Nintendo, and even Valve have similar conditions for digital purchases. Valve even makes it clear that you must have a Steam account, may be required to run the Steam client, and maintain an Internet connection to access your games.

Still, with PlayStation spearheading the end of physical media in the console space, the reminder will only anger those who are already furious with the Japanese company. And while similar legalese is used for physical media, too – though that format can be transferred, unlike a digital code – Sony is facing the brunt of the backlash.

After adding a warning about its decision to ditch discs on new PS5 console packaging and doubling down in a statement, Sony is seemingly steadfast in its decision. It means that the PS6 will be a digital-only console, and it’s likely Microsoft will follow suit with Xbox Project Helix.

We’ve rounded up every PS5 game with ray tracing support in 2026, so look no further. The PS5 is a powerful console that supports cutting-edge graphical features such as ray tracing and 120Hz refresh rates, which wasn’t possible on the PS4 or PS4 Pro.

If you're new to ray tracing, the easiest way to understand what the tech does is that it essentially helps make games look even more realistic. It allows developers to incorporate real-time lighting, reflections, and shadows into games that closely resemble what you’d expect to see in real life, making virtual worlds look all the more convincing.

However, the vast majority of PS5 games don’t include any ray tracing support. Of all the titles on our best PS5 games list, only six PlayStation 5 games support ray tracing in various forms.

The list of PS5 games with ray tracing is slim, then. But it’s been gradually growing over time. It doesn’t mean that ray tracing isn’t worthwhile – it just requires a lot of processing power and is not currently a priority for some developers to implement.

We’ve seen some games receive ray tracing support many months after launch, like Elden Ring, but it isn’t a guarantee, and how ray tracing is used also varies. Sometimes a game will only include ray-traced shadows or reflections with little impact on the overall look of a title. 

Again, ray tracing is very demanding on the PS5's hardware, so it's usually used sparingly. Sony's PS5 Pro significantly impacts how developers handle ray tracing. The console's added power enables faster ray tracing, improved performance, and allows more games to use the technology. Expect the list below to grow substantially with new PS5 Pro enhanced games.

If you’re looking for every PS5 game with ray tracing support, check out the titles below. We’ll update this list as more games are announced in the future. You can also find every Xbox Series X game with ray tracing support in 2026 and every Nintendo Switch 2 game with ray tracing support.

If you’re not interested in ray tracing and would rather play games at a higher frame rate – which is my preference – our PS5 120fps games and Xbox Series X 120fps games list every title that supports 120Hz.

PS5 games with ray tracing

Unfortunately, not all PS5 games support ray tracing. The majority of PlayStation 5 games don't include the technology because it significantly reduces performance. Those that do support the feature rarely run at 60fps as a result, which means you can usually expect a drop in resolution and frame rate to 30fps if you want to enjoy the extra graphical fidelity ray tracing can provide. Gran Turismo 7 only features ray tracing in replays, for example.

There are exceptions, however. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart all include an RT Performance mode that gives you the best of both worlds.

While we may see more games supporting ray tracing in the future, it's unlikely to become a standard feature in every release. Even on PC, where the hardware is far more capable and mature, ray tracing support isn’t guaranteed.

Ray tracing can also appear in various forms, such as reflections, lighting, or shadows, but it’s rare to see all three implemented at once, especially on consoles.

What is ray tracing?

Ray tracing is a new technique that simulates how light behaves in the real world and calculates how light reflects, refracts, and interacts with objects and materials. This can have a significant impact on the visual quality of games, as ray tracing includes various features such as reflections, shadows, and lighting, all of which contribute to creating a more realistic gaming experience.

Developers no longer have to spend hours "baking" lighting or reflections into a scene, as ray tracing offers a more dynamic and realistic solution. The main issue with ray tracing, especially on consoles, is that it requires a lot of computing power. The majority of games that do support ray tracing on the PS5 will often reduce the game's resolution and halve the frame rate to compensate for the performance impact. However, the PS5 Pro promises to change that.

It’s fair to say that ray tracing is the future, but it requires powerful hardware to get the most out of it. With that in mind, most PS5 games will not support ray tracing, even if developers find a way to balance performance in the future. You’ll need to pay $899.99 for a PS5 Pro if you want to enjoy the benefits of ray tracing without the compromises.

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive item in Sony’s Wolverine Limited Edition is still up for sale. It costs $649.99, which is $50 more than the standard Digital Edition. However, you’re saving on the controller and covers, which cost $84.99 and $74.99 when purchased separately.

The PS5 Digital Edition is also likely still in stock as people likely already have a PlayStation 5 sitting at home, so picking up a controller or the cover plates makes more sense.

The Pulse Elevate wireless speakers are armed with planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link that lets you use them on PS5, PC or Mac desktop. You can even use them with a PlayStation Portal remote player or smartphone.

Sony says the Pulse Elevate wireless speakers will offer “exceptionally lifelike audio, ultra-low latency and lossless PlayStation Link wireless connectivity”. We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the PlayStation Pulse Elevate wireless speakers, including the price, pre-order and release date.

PlayStation Pulse Elevate wireless speakers: features

The Pulse Elevate wireless speakers are packed with cutting-edge technology. The speakers support Sony’s Tempest 3D Audio in PS5 games, and feature built-in woofers that deliver rich bass tones for a full soundscape.

There’s also a mic with AI-enhanced noise rejection inside the Pulse Elevate wireless speakers. It removes unwanted background noise, and should let you communicate clearly without needing a headset.

You can tilt the speakers back to create your ideal audio experience, and there’s the option to adjust EQ, sidetone, volume and mic mute settings directly via system menus.

The speakers have a built-in rechargeable battery, which lets you take them on the go, though we’ll have to wait to see how long the batteries last. The included charging docks make it easy to jump back into your desktop gaming setup.

PlayStation Pulse Elevate wireless speakers: potential price

Sony has finally shared the price of Pulse Elevate wireless speakers. They cost $219.99, which is a little less than we predicted.

Sony recently released the Pulse Elite wireless headset and Pulse Explore wireless earbuds. The Pulse Elite cost $149.99, while the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds were more expensive at $199.99. It means the Pulse Elevate cost more than Sony’s over-ear or in-ear audio products.

We’re seeing more titles get 120fps support on PS5, including many of Sony’s first-party games like Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Don’t forget to head into each game’s settings to see whether it has a high frame rate mode, as it may not be on by default. You’ll also need to enable 120Hz in the PS5’s system settings, which we’ll explain how to do below.

Not every game on this list will hit a locked 120fps, but they all support 120Hz, meaning you can get higher frame rates than 60fps or 30fps. How do I play PS5 games at 120fps?

To play at 120fps, you’ll need a TV or monitor with a 120Hz panel. HDMI 2.1 is required for 4K at 120Hz, although many HDMI 2.0 displays can output 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p. The easiest way to see if your display supports high frame rates is to head to the PS5’s settings and then click on ‘Screen and Video’. From the ‘Video Output’ submenu, scroll down to ‘Enable 120Hz Output’. If you can’t turn this feature on, then your display isn’t capable of playing games at 120fps on PS5. You’ll also need to enable VRR for games that support 40fps modes or unlocked frame rates.

What’s the difference between 120fps and 120Hz? 🤔

The two terms are used interchangeably, but there are a few important things to note. Hertz (Hz) refers to the number of times a display refreshes per second, while frames per second (fps) is the number of individual images generated by a console or a PC. A game may support 120fps, but if you don’t have a 120Hz capable display, you won’t be able to experience it. Similarly, if you’re playing a 60fps game on a 120Hz display, you won’t be able to hit 120fps unless the game supports it.

Are there any downsides to playing PS5 games at 120fps? 🤷‍♂️

To ensure that a game can hit frame rates as high as 120fps, developers will often lower the resolution of PS5 games. That means some titles will target a resolution of 1440p or 1080p, resulting in a loss of picture clarity. Some graphical features are also reduced, such as shadow quality, foliage density and draw distance.

However, the smoothness that 120fps provides can often make up for the drop in resolution, and in online multiplayer games, a faster frame rate can make all the difference to your kill/death ratio. You’re also less likely to be focused on minor graphical details to care about the decrease in fidelity when playing a fast-paced shooter or racing game.

Could we see fewer 120fps PS5 games in the future? 🫣

There’s been a recent trend where PS5-only games like A Plague Tale: Requiem and Gotham Knights failed to offer a 60fps mode at launch, let alone a 120fps option. However, A Plague Tale: Requiem has since received a patch that lets it exceed 60fps at the cost of resolution.

We’ve seen a lot of cross-gen games in the three years the PS5 has been out, and some commentators have suggested that current-gen games will opt for more graphically demanding features in the future like ray tracing instead of aiming for higher frame rates. I always prefer a smoother frame rate over more graphical fidelity, and thankfully 30fps-only titles are a rarity. Sony’s more powerful PS5 Pro also helps circumvent this problem. Most of Sony’s first-party games also offer an unlocked 60fps or 40Hz mode instead of truly aiming for the heady heights of 120fps, but hopefully, the list of 120fps PS5 games will continue to grow in the future.

As per an article in the Wall Street Journal, Sony’s CEO, Hiroki Totoki, has stated that Sony hasn’t fixed a date for the launch of the console.

The article goes on to note that Sony’s “Shares are down about 2.5% over the past year, reflecting rising costs for essentials such as memory chips that are affecting the broader entertainment and gaming industry.”

This, in turn, has “affected the rollout of the PS6”, as per WSJ, and the expectations of a release next year “have drifted further out because of the global shortage of key components caused by the ravenous demand from AI.”.

It has been previously rumored that Sony was targeting 2027 for the PS6 release date, and that its launch plans reportedly haven’t changed.

However, this latest news is more official acknowledgement that Sony doesn’t know when the PS6 is going to launch, or how much the console is going to cost owing to the current memory situation.

This latest news compounds the feeling that the PS6 may not arrive until 2028 at the earliest, even though the console has been “top of mind” in recent months for the manufacturer.

If the PS6 does arrive in 2028, then it would be more in line with when we expect to see Microsoft’s Project Helix arrive. Microsoft confirmed in March that alpha dev kits for Project Helix should be rolling out next year, which could point to a release in 2028 or 2029 at the latest for the PlayStation 6 rival.

Rumors have indicated that the PS6 could be a versatile console with an accompanying handheld with a large amount of memory and have the ability to play discs as well as digital games.

However, the ongoing memory crisis and the recent bombshell that the brand is discontinuing physical game disc production for all new PlayStation titles starting January 2028 would lend credence to disputing those rumors. It seems like all we can do is wait and see what happens.

While every PlayStation 5 gamepad is technically identical, there are some hidden differences. A teardown showed that newer PS5 controllers have slightly more durable parts compared to the White, Midnight Black, and Cosmic Red controller colors, which we’ll explain below.

It’s also important to note that Sony raised the price of its PS5 controllers in September 2024. Pads that previously cost $69.99 are now priced at $74.99, so we’ve updated our prices to reflect this.

The price of each Sony PS5 DualSense controller ranges from $74.99 to $84.99. You can sometimes pick up a controller for less, but only at certain times of the year. We’ve seen price drops for the various PS5 controller colors during Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Amazon Prime Day, and Sony’s PlayStation-themed “Days of Play”, with discounted DualSense controllers dropping as low as $49.99 in the past. However, if you need a controller today, we recommend buying one now instead of waiting for these rare sales events as it isn’t a massive saving.

Overall, the high PS5 controller price point is justified because of its unique features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, something that we noted in our PS5 vs Xbox Series X comparison. Xbox controllers are cheaper and there are far more Xbox Series X controller colors to boot, but it’s Sony’s controller that has the fancier features.

An area where the PS5 controller falls flat, however, is the battery life. The PS5 controller battery life pales compared to the competition, but Sony could address that with a new PS5 controller that offers 12 hours of battery which leaked online. However, no announcement has been made since.

Sony continues to add to the previous DualSense controller colors which debuted with White, Cosmic Red, and Midnight Black hues in the first few months of the PS5 console. With these recent additions, our PS5 controller colors ranked list has been updated to include all 39 PlayStation 5 DualSense colors.

According to exclusive sales data seen by The Shortcut, the Cosmic Red PS5 controller was initially the most popular in terms of sales. But we thought it would be fitting to have each PS5 DualSense color in a ranked list. Your decision will come down to preference, but let’s be honest, some of these PS5 controller colors are better than others.

Below the PS5 controller colors ranked list, you’ll find an explainer of why you’ll want a second pad (i.e. battery life and the fact that the new color models have a more durable design) when diving into the growing list of the best PS5 games in 2024.

Fans of the Wizarding World quickly snapped up the Hogwarts Legacy PS5 controller shortly after it was announced on February 9, 2023, and scalpers quickly started reselling it for an extortionate price. The desirable design adds gold flourishes to the base Midnight Black color and includes the famous castle on the DualSense touchpad.

Unfortunately for collectors, the Hogwarts Legacy controller was sold in extremely limited supplies directly from PlayStation Direct, which means if you missed out when pre-orders went live on February 10, 2023, you’re out of luck.

28. God of War Ragnarok PS5 controller color

The God of War Ragnarok controller is technically more of a limited edition design than a color, but we’re including it in this list, anyway. The two-tone blue and white color scheme is a fitting tribute to the game’s Fimbulwinter setting, and the wolf and bear drawings also touch on one of Ragnarok’s important plot points.

The classic DualSense look. This is the default White/Black PS5 controller and is usually cheaper than the other controller colors. It comes as standard with the PS5 console, and a second one is often forced with GameStop PS5 bundles (that’s why we recommend the Target PS5, Sony Direct PS5, Amazon PS5 restocks at MSRP without required bundles).

The design matches Sony's PlayStation 5 two-tone, futuristic look, and while it certainly isn't for everyone, the White/Black color scheme does at least help the PS5 stand out from the competition.

I think it’s fair to say that the DualSense certainly looks pretty in pink, even if it’s lower down on our list. I took off points for the hue being so close to Cosmic Red. Still, the Nova Pink color stands out among the PS5 controller colors – it really pops. Remember, this DualSense comes with ever-so-slightly thicker trigger springs if you’ve ever had any durability concerns regarding Sony’s gamepad.

35. Gray Camouflage PS5 controller color

• Release date: January 14, 2022

I’ve never been a fan of camouflage designs, but if you like the idea of owning a DualSense controller that looks like it’s made it through military boot camp, then the Gray Camouflage PS5 DualSense controller is for you. Unlike some of the other controller colors on this list, you can also pick up a matching Gray Camouflage PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless Headset, which is one of the best PS5 headsets you can buy if you’re on a budget. Sadly, while this PS5 controller color is still worth buying if you like the design, there’s no software tie-in with SOCOM for PS5, a video game we’re expecting to hear about one day if development rumors end up being true.

This was a surprising release as Concord was a brand-new IP from Sony, this limited edition controller features elements of the Galactic Guide and Faster-Than-Light interstellar travel from the game. Unfortunately, the game has since been pulled from sale, which makes this controller a painful reminder for Sony.

37. LeBron James PS5 controller color

• Release date: July 27, 2023

Out of all the custom controller colors and special edition designs no one could have predicted, few will have seen a collaboration between PlayStation and LeBron James coming. The PS5 controller was co-designed by James himself, and he hopes it’s “something that continues to inspire everyone who touches it, and that they have a little fun finding meaning in every detail.”

While it’s certainly a cool-looking controller and will appeal to fans of LeBron James, others may find it tacky. It’s also fair to say that not everyone is a fan of “King James”, hence why it’s lower down on our list.

38. Final Fantasy 16 PS5 controller color (Japan only)

• Release date: June 6, 2023

• MSRP: ¥8,980

Sony has teamed up with Square Enix to develop a gorgeous Final Fantasy 16 PS5 controller color that features the motif from the game. Unfortunately, it’s only available in Japan with no word on a Western release date. The controller features a delicate design and crystals on the touchpad, which are painted in bright blue and metallic gold on the Midnight Black DualSense wireless controller.

39. Monster Hunter Wilds PS5 controller color (Japan only)

• Release date: February 28, 2025

• MSRP: ¥12,480

Sony has teamed up with Capcom to release a limited edition Monster Hunter Wilds controller in Japan. It features a subtle design inspired by the pattern on the first piece of equipment you can wear, which stands out in silver on both sides of the Volcanic Red DualSense wireless controller. The touchpad has an emblem design of the Forbidden Ground Survey Corps.

As of 2026, Sony has released 39 official DualSense controller colors and limited editions, ranging from the standard White and Midnight Black to collaboration designs like Helldivers 2, Astro Bot, and the Hyperpop Collection.

What is the rarest PS5 controller color?

The Final Fantasy 16 and Monster Hunter Wilds DualSense controllers are the hardest to get outside Japan, since both were released as Japan-only exclusives. The Concord controller is also increasingly hard to find at retail after the game was pulled from sale.

Which PS5 controller color is the most durable?

All 39 colors share the same internal hardware, but a teardown found that colors released after the original White, Cosmic Red, and Midnight Black use slightly thicker trigger springs (0.3mm vs 0.25mm), which may hold up better over time.

Is there a green or orange PS5 controller color?

Sony hasn’t released an official green or orange DualSense, though Chroma Teal and Remix Green come close to green. Official yellow, green, and orange versions are only available through third-party sellers.

Does the PS5 controller color affect performance?

No. Every DualSense color has identical haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and battery life – the only difference is cosmetic design and, in some cases, minor internal spring durability.

PS5 controller colors: the benefits of owning two

Even if you only own one PS5 controller, we’d recommend picking up another beyond the desire for a fresh color. The battery life on the DualSense isn’t exactly generous, offering around 6 to 12 hours at best, depending on the type of game you’re playing. If you don’t want to get caught short mid-game, then it’s wise to have another fully charged gamepad. The PS5 DualSense Charging Station can only do so much.

All 39 PS5 controllers are identical apart from their striking colors. They have the same features, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, and the same middling PS5 controller battery life. You can also pick up matching PS5 covers for some colors so that your console matches your new controller.

Keep in mind that a USB cable is not included with each purchase – you’ll have to charge the controller using the cable that came with your PS5 console.

What about the PS5 DualSense Edge Controller?

Sony released a new high-performance, ultra-customizable controller in January 2023 called the PS5 DualSense Edge. It’s Sony’s answer to the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller and is aimed at competitive online gamers who want an extra edge (get it?) in multiplayer matches. We didn’t include the DualSense Edge on our best PS5 controller colors list simply because it belongs in a category of its own.

PS5 controller price, durability differences

There are a few differences between the PS5 controllers – besides the colors – that you should know about. The standard White controller that comes with every PS5 is usually cheaper than the colorful versions (when there aren’t special deals), making it the best option if you simply need another pad.

The newer PS5 controller colors, like Starlight Blue, Nova Pink, and Galactic Purple, feature a slightly different internal design that could make them more durable. TronicsFix discovered that new DualSense controllers contain slightly thicker trigger springs in a teardown video: 0.3mm compared to 0.25mm. However, the White, Cosmic Red, and Midnight Black colors use thinner springs, which may be more prone to failure.

We say “may” because we haven't encountered any issues with the three DualSense controllers, and they all use the older spring design. Nevertheless, it's pleasing to see Sony continue to improve its design, and it’s nice knowing you’re getting the best possible version if you opt for one of the new PS5 controller colors.

Sony has announced an enticing range of Wolverine-themed limited edition PS5 items, including a console bundle, themed controllers, and console covers that could be well worth a pickup alongside the game.

They’ve been designed to celebrate the launch of the upcoming PS5 exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine, one of the biggest releases of the year that drop on September 15, 2026.

We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about Marvel’s Wolverine limited edition, including its release date, pre-order, price, and more.

Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition products

As part of a PlayStation blog post, Sony has announced an array of Wolverine-themed items that come in two different colors – the character’s signature yellow and black or white and black.

The PS5 Digital Edition bundle takes a digital PS5 and adorns it with yellow and black side panels, complete with Wolverine artwork and claw marks across the side.

The DualSense controller flips the color scheme, opting for black on the top half and yellow on the bottom half, complete with more claw marks.

Sony says this design “channels Logan’s unmistakable intensity through a bold yellow finish” and that “the design brings in Wolverine’s exposed claw marks and lets players peek under the hood of the PS5 Digital Edition and see what’s underneath”.

Furthermore, Sony says it collaborated with the game’s graphic artist, Jock, who said he wanted to “show Wolverine at his fiercest” with this bundle.

If you already own a PS5 or PS5 Pro, then you can purchase console covers directly from Sony that match this bundle, so you can add a bit of Wolverine’s signature aggression to your setup.

Likewise, the DualSense controller is available as a standalone purchase and isn’t just available as part of the bundle. It’s a similar strategy to the Ghost of Yotei Limited Edition.

If Wolverine’s classic yellow color scheme isn’t for you, then you’re in luck. Sony is also opting for a metallic silver and black finish for its console covers that’s “inspired by the adamantium bonded to Logan’s skeleton and claws” and is available for the PS5 Pro specifically. There is a two-tone controller to match, which is available as a standalone purchase.

Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition pre-order date

Sony has announced that the Wolverine Digital Edition limited edition bundles and accessories are due for pre-order on August 19 at 10am local time and will be available from PlayStation Direct and select retailers.

As for the PS5 Pro covers and controllers, they launch on September 15 in “limited quantities”, the same day Marvel’s Wolverine releases.

Sony has revealed the price of the Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition items. The PS5 Digital Edition console bundle will cost $649.99, which includes the console, controller, and a copy of the game.

The standalone DualSense controllers go for $84.99 in both colors, while the yellow console covers for the PS5 and PS5 Pro are $74.99. The PS5 Pro silver and black console covers are the same price, for reference.

Sony’s latest run of PS5 disc drive consoles now comes with an ironic warning about PlayStation’s upcoming digital future.

As per Push Square, Sony’s PS5 disc drive consoles now include a notice on the box that reads:

“Important notice: from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PS Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”

The statement is on the box several times in different languages, and the PlayStation-focused outlet reckons this disclaimer is designed to save Sony from any potential future legal trouble.

It proves that Sony isn’t backing down from its decision to discontinue physical game disc production for all new PlayStation titles starting January 2028, even though it has received monumental backlash from fans and people have started petitions requesting Sony to reverse their decision.

Sony recently explained why it was taking the decision to cease disc production, citing the overall trend towards digitization of content, “not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content.”

As Push Square has noted, the data seems to be in Sony’s favour, as just seven boxed games have sold more than 100,000 copies in the US this year, compared to over 100 back in 2008.

Despite this, there has been a hefty backlash to Sony’s actions, but this doesn’t seem like something it will back down from soon.

Sony has been quizzed about its decision to ditch physical discs in January 2028 and – despite the ongoing outrage – the Japanese company isn’t changing its mind.

In a recent earnings call (thanks, Kotaku), Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao stated that the biggest reason the brand is ditching physical discs is because of the overall trend towards digitization of content, “not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content.”

Tao went on to state that while Sony has “received various opinions” on the matter and acknowledges that “people have strong views”, it’s standing firm on its decision due to consumer trends.

Tao also said that “games are loved by many people. It’s a form of entertainment that’s loved by people, and it’s connected to people’s fond memories in many cases. And so we understand those emotions. We want to consider that. And in the future digital ecosystem, how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore.”

Sony has faced a monumental backlash after it announced it would discontinue physical game disc production for all new PlayStation titles starting January 2028. People have started petitions requesting Sony to reverse its decision, and it’s going to be difficult to get people to engage with a fully digital ecosystem as a result.

It isn’t just Sony, though, as Microsoft is also reportedly ditching discs with Project Helix, although it is reportedly working on a new method for transferring disc licenses to digital.

Likewise, we’re starting to see big game releases ditch discs, as GTA 6’s physical edition isn’t a disc and is rather a code in a box.

Whether this is a decision just for Rockstar, or something that the wider industry is going to follow, is anyone’s guess, but it isn’t looking good for those who still want physical media.
